Coronado is a Pacific coast community in the district of Chame, Panamá Oeste Province, and was Panama’s first resort development. It sits in the Arco Seco, a belt of scarce rainfall, and beach houses, apartments and lodgings are common around it.
Many vacation homes stay closed for weeks with the unit switched off, and when it is turned on again the first thing noticed is a stale smell. With the sea close, the air carries salt that adds to the humidity. Whoever does the work travels from the city, so the appointment is agreed beforehand with the owner or the management. Coronado is about 90 km by road from the Climatiza office, in an approximate calculation.
Data point: A study of air conditioning cooling coils found that their microbial ecology depended on the outdoor climate through the dew point, and that low-efficiency filters (MERV 8) were associated with a greater abundance of certain groups of bacteria and fungi than MERV 14 (Bakker et al., Indoor Air, 2020).
